"John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, was a gambler. In fact, he was so committed to the pastime that rather than take the time to set his cards down and eat with a knife and fork, he would have his meat served to him between slices of bread so that he could pick it up in one hand and continue to play cards with the other. Thus, the sandwich was born."
These are the opening statements of The New Sandwich Theory, a thrilling illustrated poster exploring the origin, definition, and limits of the sandwich - that most beloved yet oft debated dish
The New Sandwich Theory breaks sandwiches into four categories, plus a fifth "not sandwich" category for further clarification:
TRUE SANDWICHES
Dishes that adhere to both the letter and the spirit of the Theory.
TECHNICALLY SANDWICHES
Sandwiches which present the solution of a sandwich to a problem no one ever had.
FRINGE SANDWICHES
Sandwiches that truly test the limits of the definition (and my patience).
FALSE SANDWICHES
Sandwiches which have been undone, and thus, no longer qualify.
NOT SANDWICHES
Respectable and delicious foods that belong in their own categories.
